Neighborhood Yard Sale Turns Charitable in Cedar Grove

Boy Scout raises funds for Eagle Scout Project, collects items for battered women's shelter.

The Ridgewood Acres neighborhood in Cedar Grove held its annual garage sale last weekend on the Saturday after Labor Day.

This year, Cedar Grove Troop 65 Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Spinweber sold items to raise funds for the Eagle Scout Project he plans to undertake later in the year.

In keeping with the community service spirit of the Boy Scouts, Kyle also asked his neighbors participating in the sale to bag clothing and gently used toys at the end of the sale to donate to Strengthen Our Sisters (SOS), a shelter program for battered women and children.

Word of the Scout’s request spread and the residents of Cedar Grove responded enthusiastically, delivering more than fifty 30-gallon plastic bags of clothing along with boxes of toys.

“It is nice to know that donated items will be given to a worthy cause,” said Cedar Grove Councilman Peter Tanella, as he dropped off his donation.

Kyle said he was pleased to be able to sell some items and raise a portion of the funds for his project. But he was especially proud of the charitable nature of the residents of Cedar Grove.
