Cedar Grove Girls Pass Up Birthday Presents to Help Animal Shelters

North End Elementary School helps raise nearly $1K for Humane Society of Bergen County and Greyhound Friends of New Jersey.

Juliet Lombardi and her close friend Carlene Topoleski have celebrated their June 27 birthdays together since kindergarten.

This year, for their 10th birthdays, Juliet and Carlene asked their friends and classmates at North End Elementary School in Cedar Grove to donate money to animal shelters instead of getting them birthday gifts.

The fourth graders raised $964, which they split evenly between two shelters, the Humane Society of Bergen County/Lost Pet and Greyhound Friends of New Jersey.

Both girls will enter Memorial Middle School in the fall.
