Labor Day 5K Returns to Verona

Verona UNICO's fundraiser raises money for local scholarships and charities.

A Labor Day tradition will continue tomorrow when Verona UNICO will hold their 30th Annual Labor Day 5K race throughout the township.

The run begins in front of Our Lady of the Lake Church, winding through the streets of Verona and ends 3.1 miles later in Verona Park.

Depending on the weather, between 500 and 1,000 participants are expected to race, said Santi Condorelli of Verona UNICO.

Condorelli has been in charge of the race for the past three years. More than 800 people turned out for the race last year, he said.

"Some people finish the race in 25 or 30 minutes,” he said. “Its incredible how these young people can do it.”

Verona Police and volunteers help close off five roads to accommodate the race.

“We have had the same course for 30 years so residents know that between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., or until the last runner goes by, the streets will be closed,” said Condorelli. “A lot of people like to stand by the curb and cheer the runners on.”

A one mile children's Fun Run around the lake starts in Verona Park at 9 a.m.

“This is one of the most important fundraisers for Verona UNCIO, with 100 percent of the proceeds used for local scholarships and charities,” Condorelli said. “It helps these kids out a lot in getting a lot of their miscellaneous expenses going.”
