Fall Sports in Full Swing

Cedar Grove hires new coaches, while Verona moved football games.

Fall is still a few days away, but Verona and Cedar Grove athletes have been preparing for the fall sports season for several weeks now.

In Cedar Grove, new coaches have taken over in several sports including junior varsity volleyball coach Christina Nicastro, junior varsity girls soccer coach Katie Henry, junior varsity boys soccer coach Mike Moussab, junior varsity girls tennis coach Andrea Watson, varsity cheerleading coach Jennifer Noto and junior varsity cheerleading coach Ashley Milone.

“Athletics are an extension of the classroom where we teach youngsters about commitment, dedication and hard work so that they carry these skills in their future careers,” said Cedar Grove Athletic Director Dr. Joyce Cutler.

Noto has 16 cheerleaders this season and says she will teach them teamwork, discipline, dedication, respect and time management. Time management is key, she said, due to a tough schedule.

Along with four for five practices a week, the team must also balance “football games, basketball games, competitions, work and school work,” said Noto. “They also make signs and decorate for football games, host fundraisers and host a clinic for elementary and middle school students.”

Nicastro has played many sports and been a part of many teams but volleyball is her “bread and butter,” she said.

“There are 10 freshman on the JV team,” Nicastro said. “They are really progressing very well. By the time they get to the varsity level they will be a force to reckon with. I'm very proud of my girls.”

The new coach says she wants to take their progress and really make them soar by building on their offense and defense.

“Offense fills the stands, but defense wins the games,” she said.
