Residents are getting ready to hunker down to wait out the snow after Essex County declared a state of emergency.

Cedar Grove Mayor Peter Tanella is urging people to stay safe by avoiding any unneccesary travel.

"The DPW hit the roads early this morning and are working around the clock to maintain the roads," he said Friday evening.

The township has plenty of salt stockpiled and plows will continue throughout the storm, he added.

Tanella is also telling residents to call the Cedar Grove Police Department in case of emergencies but has offered his own cell phone number for residents with questions or comments. He can be reached at 973-592-1461.

The Verona Police Department is reminding residents to keep their cars out of the street and issued the following message:

"In order to help our public works department clear the roads as quickly and thoroughly as possible, please remove all parked cars from the roadway for the duration of the snowstorm, and immediately afterwards.

Overnight parking permission will NOT be granted tonight for any reason. Cars left on the roadway overnight may be towed at the owners expense.

If you do not have a place to park your car off road, please park it in the municipal parking lots at a parking meter. Meters will not be enforced during or right after the storm. Do NOT park in spaces marked permit only, unless you have the appropriate parking permit.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation."

Cedar Grove Police are also reminding residents to keep cars off the street and that overnight parking is not permitted.

Cedar Grove has also issed the following message:

"For reasons of safety, we are urging people to stay off the roads. Please avoid unnecessary travel. 

In regard to snow removal, Township Ordinance requires that sidewalks be cleared within 24 hours after the snow stops. 

Please be aware that Township Ordinance prohibits the the throwing or blowing of snow into the street. 

If you have a fire hydrant on your property, please remove the snow from the hydrant to allow the fire department access in an emergency. 

Please stay safe and call the Police Department at 973-239-4100 if need assistance."

The Verona Public Library will close at noon Friday, February 8, due to the snow storm. Please call the library at 973-857-4848 on Saturday for weekend opening information.

The Cedar Grove Public Library will close at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8 and will be closed on Saturday, Feb. 9.

All Schools in Verona and Cedar Grove will have early dismissals on Friday. Click here for early dismissal times.
