Verona Alumni Association Names Hall of Fame Inductees

Coach Paul 'Doc' Goeltz, athlete Steve Aldiero and Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr. among those to be inducted in April ceremony.

A physical education teacher, who started the baseball, soccer and golf programs, is among the Verona High School Alumni Association's latest Hall of Fame inductees.

The late Paul "Doc" Goeltz, who began his career at Verona High in 1919 and served as Athletic Director of Physical Education from 1920-1956, will be inducted under the "Coach" category. 

Other 2014 inductees announced Thursday include:

  • Custodians Jack Wickham and Anthony Carsillo for Community Service
  • Administrator Herbert Babb
  • Athlete Steve Aldiero
  • Accomplished Alumni Col. Joseph A. Simonelli Jr.
  • 1957-58 Soccer Team

"We receive so many heartfelt letters of recommendation … it is amazing to see the accomplishments and dedication put forth by VHS graduates," said Erika Desimone, Chairman, Hall of Fame Committee. "The nominees in every category were exemplary, making the selection process a truly difficult one." 

Save the date: The VHSAA Hall of Fame awards dinner and induction ceremony will take place on Thursday, April 3, at the Villa in Mountain Lakes. Details to follow.

The Hall of Fame is open to graduates and other individuals, including teachers, administrators, district employees, businesses and other members of the community. 

The selection process will reopen in summer 2014, and there is a call for new nominations.
