Turf Field Could Be in Verona High's Future, Athletic Director Says

Verona school board President John Quattrocchi said a turf vote could come in early 2014.

For the 2013-14 school year, the Verona High School football team will play its home games on the lower field because of sinkholes in the upper field. But Athletic Director Gary Farishian told the Verona-Grove Cedar Times that in a year, the damaged field could be replaced by a new artificial turf field.

Calling "turf ... the only way to go," Farishian said he believes that the reasons residents voted down turf proposals twice in the past 10 years no longer apply because there are no other options for the grass upper field in its current state.

Verona Board of Education President John Quattrocchi said a school board referendum could happen in January or February and include funds for building remediation, technology infrastructural enhancements and security improvements, according to the article. He said the major expense in the plan would be financing the construction of a wall between the upper and lower fields and compacting the current field and that the lower costs to maintain a synthetic field would help cover the artificial turf.
