Paramus Native Commits to LaSalle University

Brian Balico, who attends Bergen Catholic High School, will take his tennis racket to the Division-1 program in Philadelphia

A Paramus senior that attends Bergen Catholic officially committed to continue his tennis career at the Philadelphia-based Division 1 La Salle University on Wednesday morning.

Brian Balico, a four-year starter in first singles tennis for the Crusaders joins the La Salle Explorers and intends to study nursing. He was one of 17 seniors from Bergen Catholic to sign a NCAA Letter of Intent on Wednesday morning.

"We could celebrate 17 individuals in a way that gets them puffed up today," Bergen Catholic President Brother Brian Walsh said. "But I hope we celebrate 17 individuals in saying well done. See what happens when you put in the time, energy, sacrifice, dedication and committment and how that can lead you to success in the future. We also celebrate the parents, the hours sacrificed to bring their sons to this point."

Balico has competed in the state individual tournament for the past three years and was named 1st Team All-Big North United Division during his sophomore and junior years.

After finishing his junior season with a 13-4 record, the Paramus native will don the red and gold one final time this spring to again lead Bergen Catholic in the Big North United Division.

"We are honoring everyone who has committed to be an NCAA athlete next year," Bergen Catholic Sports Information Director Dan Long said. "These 17 athletes represent seven Crusader sports. This is a very special year for Bergen with the most sports represented here in school history."

The Explorers finished their 2012 campaign at 7-3 after competing in the Atlantic Ten Conference against Fordham, St. Bonaventure, St. Joseph's University and Temple.
