Driver Flips Car, Knocks Down Pole

An early morning accident in Verona left a woman injured and a utility pole split in half.

An early morning crash Monday left a woman injured and damaged a utility pole on Mount Prospect Avenue (Route 23) in Verona, police said.

Verona Police Chief Douglas Huber said the unidentified woman was travelling south on Mount Pleasant Avenue at approximately 3 a.m. when she hit the electric pole, splitting it in half and knocking wires down before the vehicle flipped.

He said he did not have the driver's name, age or hometown.

The driver was taken to a local hospital for injuries.

“The injuries were minor and non-life threatening,” Huber said.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were clear and dry, Huber said, adding he did not know if she was speeding.

Mount Prospect Avenue from Bloomfield Avenue to Sunset Avenue were closed to traffic for several hours while power company workers repaired the pole.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
