Verona Teen Charged With Eluding Police

17-year-old driver charged after speeding off when officer attempted to make Thanksgiving night stop on Pompton Avenue.

A 17-year-old Verona youth was arrested Thanksgiving night when he sped off as police attempted to stop his car for speeding, Cedar Grove police said.

The driver and three 15-year-old passengers were on Pompton Avenue (Route 23) around 10 p.m. Nov. 22, police said, when an officer turned on his lights and siren to stop the car.

Instead of stopping, the driver then allegedly sped up and made an abrupt turn onto Beech Street before reaching Fairview Avenue, police said. The driver then went through a stop sign on Fairview Avenue and a red light before returning to Pompton Avenue and stopping the car. No injuries were reported.

When the officer approached the car, he reported smelling marijuana.

The driver was charged with eluding police. The three 15-year-old passengers appeared to be under the influence of the drug.

All four teens were taken to police headquarters before being turned over to their guardians pending juvenile court proceedings
