Man Gave Fake Name, Tried To Flee After Heroin Found in Car: PD

Cedar Grove resident faces drug possession, providing false information and resisting arrest charges following traffic stop.

A Cedar Grove man gave a false name and attempted to flee after a traffic stop Sunday night led to the discovery of 45 envelopes of heroin in his vehicle, police said.

A 27-year-old resident was charged with heroin possession, providing false information to a police officer, and resisting arrest.

According to a police department statement, Officer Nicole O’Halloran pulled over the man for "an observed violation" just before 11 p.m.

The officer determined the man had given her a false name and was driving on a suspended license, according to the report.

As officers attempted to take the man into custody, he tried to flee and put up a struggle, police said. Officer Jose Rodriguez suffered a knee injury during the incident, police said.

The man ultimately was brought under control and arrested. The officer was treated and released from Mountainside Hospital.

Police said the man was found with 45 glassine envelopes containing heroin, along with hydrocodone and drug paraphernalia.

He was released pending a Superior Court arraignment in Newark scheduled for Aug. 1.
