Cedar Grove Golfs for Autism

LuNello's Restaurant in Cedar Grove hosts 4th Annual Golf Outing for Autism Awareness to benefit Caldwell College Center for Autism and Behavior Analysis.

Local golfers will hit the links Monday for a good cause.

LuNello Italian Restaurant, 182 Stevens Ave. in Cedar Grove will be hosting its fourth annual charity golf outing to raise money for The Caldwell College Center for Autism and Behavior Analysis.

The tournament typically raises about $10,000 a year for the college, said coordinator Karen Cirangle. In the past three years they have donated about $30,000.

“We are a big proponent of autism awareness,” said Cirangle. “We know several people with children who have this illness, which is why we decided to support them.”

“We are grateful to Lu Nello's for their continued commitment to Caldwell College's Center for Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis,” said Dr. Sharon Reeve, executive director for the center. “Their efforts benefit our work in teaching graduate students who will teach those on the autism spectrum and in serving the community, families and children.”

The idea for a fundraiser was actually started by a few Lu Nello's customers.

“It was just an idea that some golfers had at the bar and it turned into a very popular event,” said Cirangle. “We have a dinner at LuNello's afterwards which is only open to the golfers. Everyone always has a great time.”

The day begins at 9 a.m. at Essex Fells Country Club, 219 Devon Road in Essex Fells with registration, followed by brunch at 9:30.

The tournament itself begins at 11 a.m. and ends with an open bar, hors d’oeuvres and dinner at the restaurant.

The event typically draws between 100 and 110 golfers looking to play for a good cause and win some prizes along the way, Cirangle said.

Winners can look forward to trophies, a prize for closest-to-the-pin and the chance to win a car on a hole-in-one, donated by a local Toyota dealership.

The tournament costs $450 for a single golfer, which is includes dinner at Lu Nello's. Most golfers register in foursome's for $1,700 said Cirangle.
