Cedar Grove Historical Society Meeting

The next meeting of the Cedar Grove Historical Society will be held on March 26 at the Cedar Grove Public Library beginning at 7:30 p.m.  Richard A. Kennedy will present a program entitled The Essex Mountain Sanatorium.  Mr. Kennedy, an amateur historian, has a collection of photographs of the sanatorium that he has compiled into a book.  He will present a slide presentation and will sign copies of his book, which will be on sale at the meeting.

Founded in 1907, the tuberculosis hospital high on the hill over Overbrook grew to become one of the finest treatment centers in the nation, expanding into a complex of 20 buildings that encompassed nearly 300 acres.  Come hear Mr. Kennedy tell the history of the institution and his many interesting finds, including the tunnel system that connected some of the buildings.  The tunnel system is thought to still exist today.
