Council, Board of Ed Meetings in the Week Ahead

Find out what's going on this week in Verona and Cedar Grove.

The Cedar Grove Township Council will meet on Monday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. An agenda is attached.

The council recently amended a parking ordinance and passed a resolution to put a municipal question on the May 14 ballot regarding an expired trust fund.

The Verona Zoning Board will meet for a special session on Monday at 8 p.m. at the Verona Community Center. The board is expected to reach a decision on a controverisal mixed retail-residential property slated for Bloomfield Ave.

The application has drawn a big reaction from Verona residents opposed to the development. The board is expected to hear testimony from residents and make a final decision during the meeting.

The Cedar Grove High School Music Matters  Fat Tuesday Two-Mile run will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at the Cedar Grove Community Park, located on Slatterly Drive, just off Little Falls Road and begins at 4 p.m.

Prizes will be given out to the first three male and first three female runners to complete the race. Additional prizes will be given to the first three finishers in 11 different age divisions.

The Verona Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. at Verona High School. An agenda is not available but the council is working on re-examining some district procedures when picking chaperones from school trips, they announced at their last meeting.

The Cedar Grove Zoning Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. to discuss a proposal to expand St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church from 15,000- to 24,000-square feet has been cancelled. The board previously heard expert testimony from a church priest and a site engineer but will still need to hear from an architect, traffic expert and a planner before they will be able to reach a decision.

The meetings have already drawn large groups of neighbors concerned about water runoff from the elimination of trees, traffic congestion and noise.

Essex County officials will be discussing results of the recently completed Deer Management Program on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at a press conference in West Orange. Patch will be there.

The program, which recently completed its sixth year on Feb. 7, began Jan. 22 and was culled back by county officials when Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. announced the program on Jan. 15.

The program took place in the Essex County South Mountain Reservation, the Hilltop Reservation and the old Essex County Hospital Center complex. It did not include the Eagle Rock Reservation this year.
