Police: Verona Man Arrested After Brandishing Knife at Verona Inn

A 22-year-old Verona man was arrested and charged with assault after allegedly brandishing a knife at employees at the Verona Inn, police said.  

Thomas McMahon was arrested and charged with simple assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and defiant trespass after the Dec. 29 incident, according to police. 

The Cedar Grove Township Council met for its first public meeting of 2013 after a long holiday recess to discuss several items for the new year.

To better prepare for emergencies, the council purchased four new back-up generators for municipal buildings. The generators will be installed at Cedar Grove Town Hall, North End Firehouse, South End Firehouse and the Cedar Grove Public Library.

Cedar Grove Zoning Board Continues With Church Expansion Proposal

The Cedar Grove Zoning Board of Adjustment convened on Tuesday to continue a hearing on an expansion proposal from St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church.

The church, located on 5 Woodstone Drive aims to completely demolish the existing 15,000 square foot church to rebuild a 24,000 square foot church while adding additional parking and a second driveway. The church would also include classrooms for religious teachings.

Verona Schools Preparing Five Year Strategic Plan

The Verona Board of Education is working on a new five-year strategic plan, to take effect beginning September of 2013.

Elizabeth Jewett, Director of Instruction Studies, updated the Verona Board of Education on the developments of the strategic plan, which aims to “ensure our collective focus and resources remain centered upon student achievement.”

Bloomfield Ave. Proposal Meeting Postponed by Verona Zoning Board

Verona residents, who were expecting a decision from the Verona Zoning Board of Adjustment regarding a mixed retail and residential property for Bloomfield Ave., will have to wait a bit longer.

It seemed a decision might finally be reached Thursday night, but because of personal reasons, the developer's attorney Alan Trembulak was unable to attend the meeting.

Verona Reviews Lessons Learned from Hurricane Sandy

Verona Township is looking back to Hurricane Sandy to see how it can improve its response to future emergency situations.

During the Verona Township Council's public meeting on Monday, Verona Director of the Office of Emergency Management Jeff Hayes presented the council with “lessons learned” from Sandy.
