Verona Kids Help Light Up the Community Center

Verona children helped make Christmas ornaments to display on the Verona Community Center tree.

Children of all ages gathered at the Verona Community Center’s annual tree-lighting ceremony Wednesday night to brighten up the holidays and make creative Christmas ornaments.

Santa and his elves, Joey and Doreen Arminio, played Christmas music to get the kids dancing, while Jim Cunningham and other members of the Verona Recreation Department held a contest where children guessed how many bulbs they thought were on the Christmas tree.

The winner, four-year old Elena Spong, guessed 300 light bulbs. As her reward for winning, Elena helped Santa lead the procession outside and announced the countdown to light up the tree.

"Tonight was about the kids and the magic of Christmas," said Joey Arminio, who performed holiday hits on his saxophone as Santa sang. "That's really what it’s all about."
