Church Expansion Hearing Draws A Crowd

A Coptic Christian church's expansion plans drew a standing room only crowd at a Cedar Grove Zoning Board meeting Tuesday night, with more than 50 people showing up to weigh in on the application. 

St. Mark's Coptic Orthodox Church, located at 5 Woodstone Drive in Cedar Grove, aims to completely demolish its existing church and rebuild the facility to be able to house the needs of its congregation.

Residents Testify Against Proposed Bloomfield Ave Development

The Verona Zoning Board of Adjustment continued a hearing for a Bloomfield Avenue mixed retail and residential property with testimony from residents during its Thursday night public meeting.

The proposed three-story property, designed for 176 and 200 Bloomfield Ave. by developer DMH2 LLC, would include retail businesses on the first floor with residential apartments on the second and third floors, as well as two parking lots. 

Verona School District Sees Decrease in Cyber Bullying

The Verona Board of Education has seen a drastic decrease in Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) over the past year.

On Tuesday night, the Board reviewed a presentation on bullying statistics, which is required two times a year by the Department of Education, said Superintendent Steven Forte.

Verona Students Improve on HSPA Scores

The Verona Board of Education reviewed a preliminary report on district testing results for the 2011-2012 school year, during its Tuesday night public meeting.

The district has seen a decrease in kids who are partially proficient on the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA), said Forte.

Flu season is coming early in parts of the United States: This time last year, flu cases were lower in Verona and Cedar Grove than they are now, according to data on Google's Flu Trends.

Overall in New Jersey, activity is considered high now, while it was considered moderate at this time in 2011, according to Flu Trends.

Cedar Grove Police Collection to Benefit West Caldwell Soldier

The Cedar Grove Police Department is getting into the holiday spirit by organizing care-packages to send to troops serving overseas.

Donations can be dropped off in a collection bin in the lobby of the Cedar Grove Municipal Building at 525 Pompton Ave. Police will be accepting donations until January 1.
