County Golf Courses Opening March 1

DiVincenzo: Facilities upgraded with many improvements to provide first-class conditions.

In a sure sign Spring is just around the corner, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo announced Thursday, Feb. 28 the county’s three public golf courses will open the 2013 season on Friday, March 1.

“We invite golfers to come out and test their skills on the challenging greens, picturesque fairways and unique historic features of our three public golf courses,” DiVincenzo said. “Our facilities recently were upgraded with new cart paths, rebuilt tee boxes and greens, and improved drainage to enhance the playing experience and provide visitors with first-class conditions,” he added, saying “Golfers will be proud of our beautiful courses and amazed at how affordable it is to play close to home.

  • Essex County Francis Byrne Golf Course, Pleasant Valley Way, West Orange. Weekday adult green fees are $27, while weekend fees are $31.
  • Essex County Hendricks Field Golf Course, Franklin Avenue, Belleville. Weekday adult green fees are $21, while weekend fees are $25.
  • Essex County Weequahic Golf Course, off Elizabeth Avenue in Newark. Weekday adult green fees are $21, while weekend fees are $25.

Golfers must have an Essex County Golf ID card to play and make tee time reservations. Golf IDs costs $45 and can be renewed through the mail or purchased in person.

Golf IDs can be renewed in person at Essex County Hendricks Field Golf Course, 220 Franklin Ave. in Belleville. The hours are Mondays to Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

Golfers must bring their current Golf ID Card and show proof of residency. Valid proof of residency includes a New Jersey Driver's License and a current utility bill (Telephone, PSE&G or cable only) with the applicant's name on it. If bills are in a spouse's name, the applicant must show a copy of a marriage certificate. 

To renew by mail, golfers must send their current Golf ID Card, copies of two proofs of residency, a registration form and a check or money order payable to the Essex County Department of Parks. Acceptable proofs of residents include a New Jersey Driver's License, current telephone, PSE&G or cable bill, or voter's registration card with the same address.

New golfers and those who are changing their status or address must obtain their Golf ID Cards in person. 

Checks and money orders should be made payable to “Essex County Department of Parks.” Cash will only be accepted when Golf ID Cards are renewed in person.
