Pregnancy and Dentistry: What You Should Know

What pregnant women should know about visiting the dentist.

There are many new responsibilities a woman takes on while being pregnant. Abstaining from drinking and getting regular checkups with the OBGYN are just a few of the many things a woman must do while pregnant. Did you know that staying up to date on your oral health is equally important? If you are planning to become pregnant, it is a good idea to get a dental checkup before, so that any necessary dental work can be taken care of safely before pregnancy.

Often, as can happen medically, your dental health can change during pregnancy. Dental checkups are a necessary part of staying healthy while pregnant. Your body is going through many changes during this time, and these changes can affect your mouth, gums and teeth. You should be brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Gums are more prone to bleeding while pregnant, so flossing daily can keep your gums healthy and can prevent excessive bleeding and soreness. Be sure to notify your dentist of any pain, soreness, bleeding or anything else out of the ordinary. Always remember that the benefits of receiving dental care while pregnant far outweigh any potential risks.
