Verona Park Charity Walk Helps Abused Women

A surgical team will travel to the Philippines for 12 days to provide surgeries for abused and battered women as well as young victims of incest rape.

Area hospitals sponsored a charity walk in Verona Park Saturday to benefit battered women of the Philippines.

Dr. Christine Pamaar of Saint Barnabas Medical Center partnered with Hackensack University Medical Center, St. Michael's Medical Center and other area hospitals to raise money for a trip to Iloila City in the Philippines.

A surgical team will travel to Iloila between Jan. 7, 2013 and Jan. 12, 2013 to provide surgeries for abused and battered women as well as young victims of incest rape.

Pamaar said Friday she wants to raise awareness and provide immunizations to prevent cervical cancer to victims of rape, some 15 and younger.

“A group of nurses, volunteers and students will not only do surgeries but provide post operative care,” said Pamaar. “The least we can do is help with their healthcare. They have a long life ahead of them even though they are scarred.”

There is a $25 registration fee to participate in the walk and includes beverages and breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. at the park.

The trip is sponsored by the Marion Rose Foundation in Caldwell and LIG Global Foundation in East Hanover.

“We want people to be aware of these types of situations that affect women all over the world,” said Pamaar.
