The Weekend: Comedy, Choirs, and Holiday Happenings

Enjoy a variety of entertainments this weekend

Amid the bustle of holiday preparations, it is lovely and appropriate to stop and smell the proverbial roses.  Don’t let the events that make the holidays special slip by while you are busy shopping, baking, and wrapping.  Take your kids (or grandkids) to a breakfast with Santa.  Attend a holiday concert, catch a play, or attend a holiday open house.  Indulge yourself with an evening of yoga and treats.  Below Patch has highlighted several local events happening this weekend.  Try to fit in a few.  You will be glad that you did.  Happy Holidays!

Why Go? Take a break from holiday preparations and spend an evening pampering yourself.  The first hour is invigorating yoga, followed by wine and treats, including a makeover.  Leave refreshed, with a really cool swag bag packed with great stuff and discounts.

Where/When: , 706 Bloomfield Ave, Verona; Saturday noon to 4 p.m.

Why Go? Rich Sullivan, a Verona resident and father of two, suffered a serious brain injury during a fall following the October snowstorm, and faces a long and difficult recovery. Join his friends and supporters for an afternoon of food, fun, music and prizes to raise funds for Rich.

Pricing: all donations will be gratefully accepted

Where/When: , 90 Rugby Rd, Cedar Grove; Saturday  seatings at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Why Go?  Meet the jolly old elf himself at this breakfast hosted by the Cedar Grove Junior Women's Club.  Perfect for children ages 1 to 9.  Tickets are available at the Cedar Grove Recreation Dept.

Pricing: $5 per child (ages 1 to 9), $7 per adult

Where/When: , 60 Byrd Ave, Bloomfield; Saturday at 7 p.m.

Why Go? The Garden State Concert Band will perform seasonal favorites, with a featured appearance by soprano Andrea Covais. Rev. Fr. Charles Miller of Saint Thomas The Apostle Church will narrate “The Night Before Christmas,” a poem by Clement C. Moore.

Where/When: , 14 Alvin Pl, Montclair, Saturday and Sunday 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Why Go?  Young children will enjoy the zany Chicken Little story, mixed with lots of laughter and fun.  Come find out if the sky is really falling!

Where/When: , 903 Pompton Ave, Cedar Grove; Sunday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go? Enjoy refreshments and seasonal music at the Historical Society’s annual Holiday Open House.  The Cedar Grove High School vocal and instrumental students will entertain while visitors share treats (if you would like to bring a holiday treat to share call 973-746-7453 or email jeanjaeger@optonline.net).

Where/When: , 120 Bloomfield Ave, Caldwell, NJ; Saturday at 4 p.m.

Why Go?  The Children’s Choir of Caldwell College has worked especially hard all season to present a holiday concert to take place in the Alumni Theatre.  Come and enjoy child-generated music magic.

Pricing: $10 at the door

Where/When: , 20 Academy Rd, Caldwell; Saturday at 8 p.m.

Why Go?  Laugh the night away when hosts 2 young comedians, Rachel Feinstein, a finalist on Last Comic Standing, and Ari Teman, an award-winning comedian, headliner and regular at A-List clubs in New York City and around the country.
