A Memorial for Autism in Cedar Grove

Eagle Scout unveils monument for the library.

For his Eagle Scout project, Cedar Grove resident Daniel Fanelli, 17, set up an Autism Awareness Day Sunday and unveiled a monument at the Cedar Grove Public Library for awareness for the disease.

The Cedar Grove High School student organzied groups like Autism Speaks and Realizing Excellence for Alternative Learners in Special Education (REALISE) to speak to educate the community about issue.

"My brother has Autism," Fanelli said. "My dad suggested to do something for awareness and after a year it turned into this."

Fanelli's brother attends the New Beginnings School in Fairfield, which also had representatives speak for the cause.

The Cedar Grove choir also sang to the packed library to show support for Fanelli's event, which ran from 1-4 p.m.

"All we did was say yes," the library director Peter Havel, said. "He set this all up."

The granite for the monument was donated from Dancy Funeral Home, 9 Smull Ave., in Caldwell.
