Help Wipe Out Illiteracy

Literacy Volunteers of America, Essex & Passaic Counties, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting illiteracy, needs your help.

We have a long list of people who want to improve their lives by learning to do things we sometimes take for granted:  Explaining an ailment to a family doctor; writing a note to a schoolteacher when a son or daughter is absent; making out a grocery shopping list; reading prescription or over-the-counter drug warning labels; filling out an employment time card; reading street signs or understanding directions needed for public transportation.

But we need tutors. As a volunteer tutor, you can help people achieve a more rewarding life through small group (1-3 people) weekly instruction in reading, writing, and speaking English. Register for our Tutor-Training Workshop at the Montclair Public Library which meets from 12:15-4:45 pm on Saturdays, Jan. 11, 18, Feb. 1, 8, 2014. Attendance at all sessions is required. It costs only your time. For more information, please e-mail Russell at lvaessex@verizon.net or call 973-566-6200 ext. 217. We can't do it without you. Please join our campaign to battle illiteracy.
