You Love Your Bagels
Readers say there are lots of places for delicious bagels around Essex County.
New Jersey readers have good appetites and sometimes they crave a perfect bagel - made fresh from the oven, with the soft inside and dense texture eaters have come to expect.
There's no shortage of excellent bagel bakeries in our area. Here are a few you chose during this week's Readers Choice poll:
Sonny's Bagels in South Orange is reader favorite, along with Bagel Chateau in Maplewood. Sonny's opens daily at 6 a.m. with freshly-made bagels at its location on South Orange Avenue. Bagel Chateau is a popular eatery on Maplewood Avenue and a good place to run into your neighbors.
In West Orange, Poppy's Bagels on Mount Pleasant Avenue was far and away residents' favorite bagel shop in the surrounding area. During a busy morning rush, Jacob Geffner, a manager at Poppy's, said he was pleased with the honor."We love our customers and we try to show it," he said on why people come.
Millburn bagel fans chose Bagel Chateau on Millburn Avenue as their place to nosh. The bakery is known not only for its bagels, but for a "flagel" (bagel plus a flat) and also sells soups, omelettes, burgers and deli sandwiches.
Verona-Cedar Grove Patch readers have had their say and chosen Bagelwich in Verona as the place they love to go for their morning bagel and schmear in our latest Readers’ Choice poll. Bagelwich, located at 652 Bloomfield Ave,. offers more than 20 varieties of bagels baked fresh daily, as well as catering, takeout, eat-in and local delivery service.
When Bloomfield voted this week, Hot Bagels Abroad was the clear favorite. In fact, last September, when Montclair Patch surveyed bagel makers in the area, they concluded, “we searched for the best bagel in Montclair – only to determine that it’s actually in Bloomfield! Coming in at a clear #1 is Hot Bagels Abroad(HBA), at 1129 Broad Street in Bloomfield.”http://montclair.patch.com/articles/where-can-you-get-the-best-bagel
In fact, Hot Bagels Abroad also won the distinction of baking the best bagel in all of Essex County a couple of years ago, when Suburban Essex Magazine ran aBEST OF ESSEX COUNTY 2010 contest.
Bagel Boy was your favorite for Nutley, located at 287 Franklin Ave. Sunrise Hot Bagels, 650 Joralemon St., and International Hot Bagels, 306 Washington Ave., were co-favorites in Belleville. International Hot Bagels delivers a taste of New York in the heart of Belleville with piping hot fresh bagels each morning.
Finally, Simply Bagels in Newark also gained support from your votes. Simply Bagels offers fresh bagels baked throughout the day, cream cheeses, spreads, cheeses, deli sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, coffees, teas and juices.
Montclair Patch readers have decided their go-to choice for bagels is Hot Bagels Abroad. But the heavily trafficked spot at 150 Valley Road beat Sunrise Bagelsat 29 Watchung Plaza only by a hair.
Also popular, and coming in third place, was Beyond The Bagel at 219 Bellevue Avenue, a family-owned and operated shop.
Hot Bagels Abroad wants folks to know that the business has a lot more to offer than just great bagels. This shop also features a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items, daily specials, and friendly service.
When it comes to Sunrise Bagels, the shop makes its own bagels the old-fashioned way, by boiling and baking them. As a result, the business enjoys a dedicated following of customers.
The overwhelming majority of Caldwells Patch readers chose Sam's Bagel and Delias their favorite bagel in the Caldwells in our latest Readers' Choice poll. Sam's, located in the Broadway Square Mall at 757 Bloomfield Ave., in West Caldwell, was also the winner of our 2011 bagel battle. Reviewer Ron Albanese said, "Sam's bagels are dense, as a classic bagel should be."
Next week, readers will be asked to vote for their favorite florist.

Not sure where you are in South Jersey Sandy, but if you are near LBI, try Bageleddi's in Ship Bottom.

There seems to be an endless amount of polls taken about people and businesses in New Jersey. However, my favorite doctor, dentist or restaurant isn't always nominated or a winner because of many reasons, including things that have nothing to do with selecting the most worthy winner. I wish there was an independent company like Consumer Reports who could honestly evaluate all of the participants, businesses and products. Shop-rite will always win over Stop and Shop when polls are based strictly on the number of voters. I've voted 100 times for certain restaurants. That isn't a valid poll but it is the way the system works. Let's get some polls by a professional company and see who really should win. For that entrepreneur out there, this would be a great new business. Give Jersey some polls that we can trust in all the time.

It's just for fun. Some people like coffee, some people like tea. If your favorite doesn't win (even after you try to rig the result by voting 100 times), it doesn't mean you're wrong. It just means more people prefer something else.
Life's a gift. Life's short. Smile. Don't complain.

I have not come across another bagel store in the area that are better than Sam's Bagels. No surprise they're voted the best.

Sunrise Hot Bagels in Belleville is my absolute favorite! Love their bagels (and cold cuts, especially the roast beef . . . making my mouth water just thinking about it) and their coffee is wonderful!! I stopped going to Dunkin Donuts when I discovered their coffee!
