Waterview Center Evacuated During Hurricane Sandy

Storm tore the roof off Waterview Center nursing home causing the township to evacuate patients. No injuries were reported.

Patients at Waterview Center nursing home in Cedar Grove were evacuated Tuesday morning after Hurricane Sandy blew part of the roof off the building around 5:45 a.m..

Emergency responders made the decision that the facility needed to be evacuated, said Mayor Peter Tanella. There was significant damage to the interior of the building making it necessary for a full evacuation.

No injuries are reported at this time, said Tanella.

The seniors were taken out on chairs and gurneys and taken to similar facilities and nearby Waterview affiliates, he said.

They were transported in township buses and ambulances with the help of Cedar Grove, as well as Verona emergency responders.

“Most of the phone lines are down but the seniors may be able to contact relatives on cell phones,” said Tanella.
