Go Idle Free Verona

The Verona Environmental Commission was awarded the Environmental Achievement Award for its successful video "Go Idle Free Verona."

The award was presented Saturday, Oct. 20 at The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions' (ANJEC) 39th Annual Environmental Congress held at the Middlesex County College in Edison.

The award was presented by Nelson Dittmar Jr., President of ANJEC.

Go Idle Free Verona is part of the Commissions' clean air campaign to get Verona residents to turn off their engines when they aren't driving to help decrease the amount of air pollution.

The campaign was started in 2009 by requesting to install no-idling street signage and holding an elementary school poster contest.

“Unnecessary vehicle idling is wasteful and creates harmful pollution,” the Verona Environmental Commission said in a written statement. “According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection an idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling at 30 miles per hour.”
