Fun Events to Attend This Weekend

 

This weekend features events for folks of all ages, from the Hungry Caterpillar for the youngest among us, to a Coffee House for the Junior High set, to theater for adults.  Many events will appeal to various age groups, such as The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (where Uncle Floyd Vivino will perform!), and the Jackals baseball game.  Tycoon Dog is playing at the Turtle Back Zoo, and the Shillelagh/Celtic Sisters are hosting a family picnic. So read on for details, and have a terrific weekend!

New Jersey Jackals vs the Brockton Rox

Where/When: Montclair State University, Yogi Berra Stadium, Normal Ave & Valley Rd, Upper Montclair; Saturday at  6:35pm

Why Go? Summer is made for local baseball games.  Grab a hotdog, put on your baseball cap, and sit back to enjoy the game!  There will be a Fireworks Spectacular following the game.

Pricing: $9 for reserved seats, $11 for box seats

Movie at Morgan's Farm: Despicable Me

Where/When: Cedar Grove Historical Society - Morgan Farm and Museum, 903 Pompton Ave, Cedar Grove; Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Why Go? Spend a relaxing evening out of doors with your neighbors, watching an entertaining, family-friendly movie under the stars.  Bring blanket or lawn chair, and the entire family.

Junior High Presbyterian Fellowship Coffee House

Where/When: Hobcaw Cafe, 20 Grove Ave, Verona; Sunday 7:00 p.m.

Why Go?  This first meeting of the new Junior High Fellowship Coffee House will be a feedback session to share ideas on what the teens would like in a monthly coffee house.  Come have a beverage from Hobcaw’s wide selection and bring your ideas for music, speakers, readings and more.  Open to students going into the 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade.

Pricing: Admission is free.

“Penny Penniworth”

Where/When: New Jersey Arts Incubator, 495 Prospect Ave, West Orange; Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m, Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Why Go? Penny Penniworth is an hysterical satire featuring four actors portraying 14 different characters and spoofing such familiar topics as Masterpiece Theatre, Nicholas Nickleby and the collected works of Charles Dickens.  Enjoy the physical comedy, the witty wordplay, and funny accents by New Jersey actors Harry Patrick Christian, Rick Delaney, Jenelle Sosa, and Terri Sturtevant.

The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - 3 Day Festival

Where/When: Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 94 Pine St, Montclair; Friday evening, 5:00-10:00 p.m.. Saturday and Sunday, 4:00-10:00 p.m.

Why Go? The Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be celebrated with a three-day festival, including good food, rides, games of chance, 50/50s, popper instant games, and a super 50/50.  Festivities begin with a Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Fish & Chips Supper. On Saturday and Sunday  there will be an indoor flea market.  Shirley Alston Reeves of the Shirelles will entertain on Saturday night and do not miss Uncle Floyd Vivino on Sunday night!

On Sunday, there will be a Mass in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at 10:00 a.m., and the statue of Our Lady will be carried through the streets from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m..

Pricing: admission to festival is free, Fish & Chips Supper is $15

"The Very Hungry Caterpillar"

Where/When: Essex County Environmental Center, 621a Eagle Rock Ave, Roseland; Saturday at  9:30am

Why Go? Children ages 3½ to 5 will enjoy listening to Ms. Barbara read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, learn about caterpillars' metamorphosis from egg to adult, and paint and create their own caterpillar craft.  After the craft, the group will spend a few minutes in the Environmental Center's live butterfly tent.

Pricing: is $6 per child and $8 per adult. Advance registration is required.

Shillelagh/Celtic Sisters Free Family Fun Picnic

Where/When: The Order of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, 648 Prospect Ave, West Orange; Saturday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Why Go? The most fun activities are featured at this FREE event: Moon Walk, Dunk Tank, Face Painting, Bucket Race, Egg Toss, Turtle Back Zoo Station and more.  Add some DJ entertainment and great food, and you have a party!  Bring a towel and a lawn chair.

Pricing: admission is free

Turtle Back Zoo - Live Music by Tycoon Dog

Where/When: Turtle Back Zoo  560 Northfield Ave, West Orange; Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Why Go? Tycoon Dog will perform their playful brand of rock with a set from their self-released CD Ruff Cuts.  The concert is free with Zoo admission.

Pricing: Zoo Admission: Adults $10,  Children $7
