Singer Lauryn Hill Charged with Tax Evasion
U.S. attorney's office said South Orange resident failed to pay taxes on $1.6 million of income.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Newark on Thursday charged singer and actress Lauryn Hill with failing to file tax returns for three years on some $1.6 million in income.
Hill, a South Orange resident, is charged with three counts of failing to file tax returns, in 2005, 2006 and 2007. She is scheduled to appear before a U.S. magistrate for a hearing on the charges on June 29.
U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement that Hill owns four corporations besides her income as an entertainer. They include Creations Music, Inc., Boogie Tours, Inc., L.H. Productions 2001, Inc. and Studio 22, Inc.
Hill, who graduated from Columbia High School in Maplewood, is best known for her work with fellow singer Wyclef Jean in the group The Fugees, and for her solo recording, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. That release earned her five Grammy awards, including Best New Artist and Album of ther Year.
If convicted, Hill could face a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine for each of the three counts.

Geez, people...way to freak out over a short news report. If you don't think it's "breaking news" or relevant to your life (or town), then just "x" out of it and forget it. Why waste another minute of your life to complain about it??

Let me briefly explain:
Some sites in another region in Patch had the breaking news tag clicked (as it's more germane to their sites) and when a staff member up here cross-posted the story, they forgot to remove the tag, sending the alert to inboxes. Again, apologies. We try to be judicious in the alerts we send out.

The goverment will cut a deal, and have her pay a percent. And all will be over.
But my question is the average person that owes 160,000.00 or 16,000.00 or 1600.00 in taxes will they get the same deal? NO they don't
Our goverment is so corrupt and unfair, I can not put it into words, with out getting upset!

What I want to know is why she got until the end of the month to appear before the U.S. magistrate for not filing taxes for those years & I owed 44,000.00 for 2010 of which I just finished paying and I was only given 10 days before the put a lien on my house & seized my bank account. Come on people, is that a lawsuit for descrimation or what againt this piece of shit government or what?

Yeah James, if the story is about Lauren Hill it's called "hip hop" news. Not "breakin'" news. Break dancing is so 1980's.

The fact this was labeled "Breaking News" was completely my fault. It was breaking news in South Orange, where the story was originally posted. We have a cross-posting feature where I can add the story to other sites, which I used in this case, but forgot to un-check the "Breaking News" box before I did so, which triggered breaking news alerts across Bergen, Passaic and Hudson counties.
Again, my bad. We try our best to limit breaking news to actual breaking news, and I agree that this does not meet that standard in our neck of the woods.

Why is this news? And if it is, there must be others in town who do not pay taxes, shouldn't they then be listed? Lauren Hill has a family here, kids who will read this. I do not think it is news worthy to post our South Orange residents' tax status.

I'm not quite sure who Lauren Hill is, but I commend her for being wise enough to eff the bloody government by refusing to pay taxes. People do it as a form of protest. Whether she did or not, she should consider herself blessed, as this means she did not contribute to the assassinations and wars overseas. Make her front page news. Follow her bloody example.

So much Ado about what?
Sometimes if we just let things go they die a natural death.
Guys - press the "Ignostril" (your right nostril) and let things die and Go.
Live life - these things are trival.
I am sure Ms.Hill will attest "Nuh woman a Cry" and that she will do just fine.
Good Luck going foward Lauryn.
Are you sure you are Bob's "Daughter in Law" and not his Daughter *Smiles.
He would have been proud.
