Nor'easter Could Cause More Power Outages, Governor Warns

Power has been restored to millions of customers since Hurricane Sandy caused damage across the state, but a new storm could undo many repairs.

A Nor'easter headed toward New Jersey could slow the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy and even cause more power outages, Governor Chris Christie said Tuesday.

Forecasters have predicted the storm will hit New Jersey Wednesday and could bring gusts of 50 or 60 miles per hour. Crews cleaning up from Hurricane Sandy and restoring power are not allowed up in their bucket trucks if winds hit 40 miles per hour or more.

"If you've gotten power, some of you may lose power again," Christie said.

More than 11,000 crews have been working to restore power in New Jersey since Hurricane Sandy caused outages for about 2.76 million customers across the state. As of Tuesday morning, Atlantic City Electric had about 100 percent of their customers back on, Christie said. PSE&G had about 87 percent, JCP&L had about 80 percent and Orange & Rockland had about 84 percent of their customers restored.

Christie also warned that flooding could be a problem along the coast and barrier islands, where Hurricane Sandy already caused flooding last week. The National Weather Service has predicted "moderate flooding" along the coast Wednesday night, but that prediciton does not necessarily account for changes to the coast caused by Hurricane Sandy.

"The dunes are gone," Christie said. "Mild to moderate flooding could become major flooding. We don't know."

Inland flooding is less of a concern, Christie said. Before Hurricane Sandy, state officials had ordered several reservoirs to be lowered to lessen the risk of flooding, but the storm brought less rain than predicted. Only Pompton Lake has been pegged to be lowered again before the Nor'easter hits.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is forecasting that it could start raining early Wednesday. That rain could change to snow throughout the course of the day. Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid to low 30s Tuesday and Wednesday night and in the mid 40s on Wednesday.

“We’ll have enough cold air that we could see some snowfall mixing in but right now it looks like we’re going to get snow mixing with rain,” said Mike Layer, a meteorologist with the NWS’s Upton, N.Y. office. “If it’s just cold enough we could see a period of just all snow but we’re not looking at too much accumulation.”

Layer said accumulations could be less than 1 inch by the time the storm leaves the area Wednesday night into Thursday. The forecasted amount could change depending on which direction the storm moves up the coast.

“If it goes west we could see higher amounts of precipitation. If it heads East, we could see lower amounts,” Layer said.

Weather.com is reporting that the storm could cause additional power outages.

The NWS has issued a wind advisory for much of North Jersey, including Passaic, Bergen and Morris counties, from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.

The storm could also bring strong winds but not as fierce as those felt during Sandy. Those winds, which gusted up to 90 miles per hour, knocked down trees, telephone poles and power lines throughout North Jersey.

Layer said winds are forecast to be between 20 to 25 miles per hour with gusts between 35 and 60 miles per hour in the higher elevations.

Me too! Still powerless. There is no way 80% have been restored. If yes, then its another indication that my road is always the last in Wayne to get power. (seriously, with Irene there were 30 houses left on the grid, and they were ours!-8 days then)

These trees fall and take the wires down with them because JCPL and other electric copanies do not do their jobs. They are supposed to check, cut and trim the trees that hang over the wires year round so that situation like this either does not arise or it is not this ridiculous at least. Whole year they do not do their job and when there is an emergency then they are unable to keep the pace. It is our leaders' job as well to keep these companies tight so they work efficiently. Otherwise what are these people good for?!!

Sorry, but no amount of trimming is going to stop an 80 foot oak tree from falling across a street and taking out everything in it's path.

@chokhi, if someone had asked you on October 29 to predict exactly WHICH trees would be falling and which trees would remain standing during this storm, all across the affected area, what would your accuracy rate have been? Please be honest.

At this point, I'd rather not have my power restored until AFTER this nor'easter. If I finally get power back before the storm hits, only to have it yanked away again, I might lose my mind...

I really like Gov.Christie but I think he's been "had" by the power companies. 80% just isn't true .. I have been driving all over Long Valley today ..haven't seen a soul working on anything except for individual companies taking down trees. I am happy for Atlantic City that has 100% power restoration ..but to be virtually ignored in Long Valley is deplorable. Last year, after 2 storms that left us without power for several days & when I called JCP& L about my bill that was unchanged from what I usually pay ..they told me to read the meter numbers ..I was shocked when they told me I actually owed $200 more ..I was so angry ! We are being ripped off. Yes, others have it worse but we have not even seen where this week is going to take us . Praying for all of us now because JCP& L obviously is too busy counting their money to stop & help us !

I'd love to know how O&R is measuring its outages. On one page they say they have 5,900 outages but on the map on just one triangle it says 8,061 customers don't have power. It says there are 211 outages affecting those 8,061. So there are way more people than 5,900 who still don't have power. They have a great PR person who knows how to spin the numbers. I hope Christie does something about O&R and JCP&L and others that are skewing the numbers to make themselves look good.

Home no power - Check
Work no power - Check
Getting the run around from PSE&G - Check
98% of south regions which were hit hardest had power restored. Up in Ironbound Newark, 8 days in counting with no power at home address and at work. Saw a couple of PSE&G line trucks in the area this morning and they just sat in their vehicles all morning and left right before lunch without doing a single thing. Is anyone supposed to be held accountable for this fiasco?

Governor - you want to do something which will work? Sponsor a law that requires any utility to refund a full month's worth of charges for any customers who are not restored service within 7 days (7 days after the end of the situation causing the outage, to be fair - 7 days when repairs possible). Do this to be fair to your citizens. Do this to hold utilities to the seriousness of their essential services and exclusive franchises. Put their skin in the game.

Please call JCP and L customer service # 1-800-662-3115 everyday! For Hazardous situations like down Power lines and multiple streetlight problems and power outages.
Call customer service every day and let them know it is very important they fix this situation as it is a Safety issue now. It is best to call at 8AM as they are less busy at this time.
I called today and they are hoping to have everybody up in Parsippany by SAT. They should be ashamed for keeping us in the dark for so long. They should not send us a bill for this whole month or offer us a deep discount. We are losing a lot of money on gas for the generator, going out to eat everyday, hotel stays. This is a natural disaster and I understand but they are the Power experts and they should have a plan in place to keep us all safe. This is a major inconvenience. We are high paying tax customers and we do not deserve to be treated like this. Our power should have been restored long time ago. I wonder what Mayor James Barberio could do to help us. HIS # is 973-263-4297. Call him too and ask him.

The problem here is the crappy infrastructure. Power lines should be buried In the ground like in other countries. Substations should never have to be shut down due to risk of flooding. This whole setup was not built correctly from the beginning. The power grid is way too fragile. I understand why it was built this way. It creates jobs for the power companies. Not good for the consumer. Now we are facing another wind storm tomorrow and I guarantee you that it's going to result in more power outages.

Sure it is a great idea to put all of the wies underground. It's very easy to do unless it is a rocky area like much of northern New Jersey then it becomes much more expensive which means higher rates and when they do rupture the average outage isn't just an hour or two but many hours and even days.

The power, phone and cable lines can be buried in the ground just like the gas lines. If you visit any European city or suburb you will see what I mean. Overseas, people laugh at us when they see the way the utility companies deliver power, phone and cable to our households from pole to pole. All you need is one tree falling down and the entire neighborhood is out of service. The utility companies took the easy way out installing all the lines up in the air. It guarantees work for them as well. This is why your power is out for 10 days. Put the utility lines in the ground, pay a little more and you won't have these frequent outages every times the wind blows too hard.

It's Mother Nature people! The great humbler. Calm down - no heat and hot water and lights suck - I agree. It's hard for everyone. But let's be productive and donate your free time to a shelter where there are people who are worse off than you. God spared your life - enjoy it. My grandparents are probably rolling over in their graves, wondering why so many people w/so much complain and whine so much. My 5 year old doesn't whine as much! Stay safe and be well!

Coming from someone with power -- if you didn't your 5 yo would be driving you crazy by now. Hard to be productive while you are either paying out the nose for loding and food and trying to keep your pipes from freezing and trying to manage out of a hotel room. Love people with an opinion who haven't truly experienced the hardship people are going while big business that is only concerned with the shareholders at their public company (JCP&L) haven't been trimming the trees or maintaining the infrastructure for years so the magnitude of this is more severe and their biggest concern is shareholder losses not how much this is costing the average small business owner or homeowner or elderly people and families with small children. Jen -- you go donate your time while those paid top do a job don't do it.

Edge is right burying the cables is the answer but we like to take the absent minded short term approach to everything in our country. Maximize profits and kick the can down the road for someone else to deal with. The American philosophy that we live by in this once great country of ours.

Eddie. This is more of a bigger issue. The utility companies need look at their crappy, fragile infrastructure and find ways to minimize outages moving forward. You shouldn't be losing power to your home just because the wind blows a little too hard or due to snow / rain. Burying the cables in the ground is one option. The consumer will have to pay for this but it will be worth the investment. I realized years ago that this crappy utility setup was too unreliable. My house is on generator backup as soon as the power goes out. People shouldn't have to be worrying about the power going out every time a storm hits. Long term solutions have to be put in place. In the meantime, you can put more clothes on to keep warm.
