The Kessler Foundation held a Jersey-Shore-themed night at the Grove, Thursday, to raise money for people with disabilities affected by Hurricane Sandy.

“Rebuilding Lives After Hurricane Sandy: A Benefit for People with Disabilities,” featured comedian Jeff Norris, a New Jersey native, the premiere 80’s cover band — the Emulators — and The Platinum Band.

The evening was highlighted by raffles, Boardwalk games, caricature artists and a classic Jersey Shore menu. Entertainer Ben Vereen, who has received care at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, also performed at the event.

“The impact of this historic storm on people with disabilities must not be overlooked,” said Rodger DeRose, president and chief executive officer of Kessler Foundation. “Many lost wheelchairs, vehicles, and ramps and access to housing and independent living facilities.”

Norris started off the event with some jokes before Vereen took the stage.

“Did everyone's power go out?” Norris asked the audience. “So did mine, I was calling PSE&G, JCP&L, A&P, AARP, MTV...anyone with letters to come fix my power!”

“I'm giving back to laughter,” said Norris before his performance. “It's a good night out for a great cause. I'm proud to be here to offer a little comic relief.”

All proceeds collected from the event will be donated to help rebuild the lives of people with disabilities whose needs are even greater since Hurricane Sandy.
