Field of Township Council Candidates Established

Nonpartisan elections will be held May 10.

Verona and Cedar Grove will both have contested municipal elections this year. In Verona, eight candidates will vie for two 4-year seats and one 2-year seat, while in Cedar Grove, two candidates will battle it out for a two year seat.

Cedar Grove Mayor Robert O'Toole and Councilman Peter Tanella will both run unopposed for 4-year seats on the governing body. Incumbent Councilman E. Romeo Longo will face a challenge from Cheryl Brown for the 2-year seat previously held by Councilman Patrick DeFrancisci, who resigned last year.

Tanella was appointed in September following DeFrancisci's resignation.

In Verona, the field is wide open. Deputy Mayor Frank Sapienza is the lone incumbent seeking re-election. Mayor Teena Schwartz announced this week she .

Sapienza is vying for one of two 4-year seats up for election this year, and will face challengers Robert Caruso, Daniel McGinley and Michael Nochimson.

Four candidates have submitted petitions to run for the unexpired two-year seat of Councilman Ken McKenna: James Robbins, Kevin Ryan, Gerard Tamburino and Bruce Williams.

The Verona Township Council to leave McKenna's seat vacant until the election.

The nonpartisan election will be held on May 10.
