Monday's District 4 Freeholder candidate's debate at Verona High School erupted in anger in the closing minutes. Readers asked to hear the final moments for themselves, and we've responded. Obtaining video of the debate is still in the works, but in the meantime, here is a short clip of the fiery exchange between Cedar Grove Deputy Mayor Joseph Chiusolo and Acting District 4 Freeholder Leonard Luciano.

This clip contains language that may not be suitable for all viewers.

You can check out our original story on the debate here.

Interesting that you would only play the Audio & not show the actual Video! I was at the debate & witnessed Chiusolo having to be PHYSICALLY RESTRAINED by 3 people because he was going to hit Luciano! NOW THAT IS DESPICABLE!! Why the violence? Is THIS what Chiusolo would rather have his daughter witness as opposed to simply listening to the facts that Luciano was trying to share with the audience? Why respond in such an outrageous hot-headed manner if Chiusolo has not done anything wrong?! I will NOT vote for a man who is violent, angry, and flies off the handle. If the entire Video was played you would have seen & heard Chiusolo say on MANY occasions that the County does not create jobs, spends frivolously, and doesn't have the best interest of the taxpayers in mind. Luciano's point was that Chiusolo is entirely misleading when he makes those comments for Chiusolo himself has taken (meaning accepted) thousands & thousands of dollars in contracts from the County!! CHIUSOLO WAS EMPLOYED BY THE COUNTY...WHY DOESN'T HE WANT OTHER TAXPAYERS TO BE OFFERED THE SAME FAIR CHANCE TO HAVE CONTRACTS WITH THE COUNTY?

Thanks.. you make a good point.
Can we hear the entire tape, Chris? Please supply the tape of the entire debate (I can compress it for you if you would like) and upload it. To just upload the last two minutes is bad journalism. If you refuse to upload the entire thing, so the segment thats there now can be heard in its context, I think you should pull it.

Luciano never said anything about illegal bidding or stealing going on. Chiusolo created a Violent scene with blatant cursing & attempted physical abuse against his opponent (all in front of his daughter that he claims to have been so worried about)! Chiusolo created a scene to divert the audience's attention from Luciano's true & factual statements. Look it up yourself people...under the OPRA (Open Public Records Act) you have the right to look up this information & see the facts for yourself, which was the document Luciano was holding in his hand the night of the debate!

Luciano said the guy was on "the take" everyone knows what that means. He should drop out of the race if he is not resigning. At minimum there should be a public apology.

@Chloe- I ran the audio because all I have right now is the audio recording I made myself. I've been attempting to get a video from the Cedar Grove Cable TV Committee, and as soon as I do, you can count on me running the clip here.

Chris, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I think you should produce the whole tape.

I can't speak for others but I want to see issues, period. I'm tired of WEDGE ISSUES and the rest of those tactics from the GOP playbook.

It is called freedom of speech. Lenny has a right to make that statement and all Chiusolo has to do is respond back if he thinks it is false . The citizens themselves can decipher whats true and whats false. People in the audience were rude in interuppting the debate.

Justin Lenny is an Official of essex county. That being the case whether appointed of elected if he is going to accuse Mr. Chiusolo of any wrong doing it must be throught the states legal system and not during a debate. Saying someone is "ON THE TAKE" is a very serious accusation and should of been handled that way by Lenny and brought to the prosecutors office to be investigated. Lenny is a Lose cannon he already proved that when he ran for election and lost three times in West Caldwell.

Can we hear the entire debate? Not just the last few minutes..

I think that Luciano sounds articulate and intelligent. He also made a bad choice of words, but apart from that, he sounds reasonable and intelligent. In those few seconds which Mr Nesi, a Republican, deemed favorable to his party's candidate, that seems clear. I know little about this election. All I've seen is name calling. I can't speak for anybody else but I know tactics out of the Republican wedge politics playbook when I see them.

BTW, when are we going to get honest voting machines that can't be hacked like the Sequoia AVC Advantage ones can? The state Board of Election is under court order to fix this. According to researchers at Princeton, they have been dragging their feet. Also where can I find some intelligent journalism or discussion *about the issues* in this election, as discussed by *actual Essex County residents*?

New Jersey Still Needs to Fix Its Electronic Voting
By THE EDITORIAL BOARD

New Jersey was lucky to get through the 2008 election without a major voting machine scandal. But with the election for governor less than a year away, it’s about to tempt the fates once again.

In a report last month, a computer expert from Princeton University said that most of the state’s 10,000 voting machines could be hacked into in about seven minutes and that the machines were “too insecure to use in New Jersey.” He made the assessment in connection with a public interest group’s lawsuit to block use of the machines.

The state used the machines anyway, and apparently got away with it. "... (read the article)

And everything they said still applies and still has not been addressed. What is going on in Trenton, why are they dragging their feet?

I for one would be happy for everyone to hear and SEE the entire tape. I was there, Mr. Luciano was poorly prepared, showed true lack of experience, and was incorrect in most everything he said. As for his slanderous statement, inappropriate, insightful and amateurish.

If you really believe that he would be good for this county then shame on you. He is a puppet for the Democratic machine. Funny how he wasn't seen in any photos at the recent opening of the Executive's restaurant? That would normally be a great photo op? Where's the County Executive's support? Is he second guessing his choice? Seems like Mr. Luciano has been dropped like a hot potato!

I wonder who put him up to that comment? Smells like a big fat rat!

Was glad that I went to the debate in order to judge who, in my opinion, would make the better freeholder for our district. Yes, both had some favorable, as well as favorable characteristics. However, Mr. Luciano was unprepared, unprofessional, and way out of line by accusing Mr. Chiusolo of being on the take. Whether this was a result of his having a "full platter" with his job and studies towards a doctorate, really don't know. Mr. Chiusolo' constant refrain that of revenue flow should be tied to profit struck a very powerful note with which I totally agree.

I find it more than a bit unprofessional to post only a portion of the debate when the entire debate is of relevance to voters in making their decision. Obviously, the entire debate is on the same tape. Why not post it? For that reason, I am inclined to view the situation as inconclusive. We deserve to hear the entire tape, not just a tiny portion.
