A Visit With Sue Waldman in Verona Yields Peace, and Chocolate
Waldman, a psychotherapist, offers weekly meditation sessions designed for women.
If you want to improve your mood and feel at peace, meditation is the way to go. When you close your eyes for a few minutes and explore your subconscious, you’ll be off to a serene comfort zone.
Sue Waldman hosts a meditation night for women every Tuesday, at 7:30 p.m., at her office, 320A Bloomfield Ave., Verona. [Note: Due to space limitations, you must register in advance.]
The relaxation begins almost immediately as you walk into her soft, artistic, intimate room filled with fresh flowers and angel statuettes; walls painted in mauve and violet; chairs with both rose and soft leopard-spotted patterns; and the soothing aroma of birch-scented oils.
Waldman guides a small group of women through a gentle visualization and meditation, using chimes, aromatherapy and color therapy (with a heat lamp) which further induce relaxation. Her positive affirmations quickly relax her guests, taking them far away from their day-to-day stresses.
Waldman, who has a 17-year psychotherapy practice, specializes in working with women. She incorporates a spiritual approach to psychotherapy. “I believe talk therapy doesn’t get to the root of what someone is suffering from,” she said.
She started her meditation classes two years ago. She hasn’t had official training, but the women love her meditations. Her chimes are a big part of the meditation process because she says they help stop the racing thoughts which prevent a person from fully letting go and being at peace.
“By hearing the chimes, it really lets you go inside yourself,” she said. “The purpose of the meditation is to completely relax your mind and connect yourself to your spirit. The most important thing is making the women feel safe and that the atmosphere is sacred, knowing that there is nothing you have to do. I’m going to take care of you.”
Everyone’s experience is different and Waldman wants everyone to walk out feeling good. To ensure that, she sends all the ladies off with a large chocolate bar!
